Formerly Director of External Information and Research for the UAE Federal Government's National Media Council, where he is now an Adviser, he previously worked as Adviser, Foreign Language Broadcasting and as head of the English service of the Emirates News Agency, WAM, for the Ministry of Information and Culture, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as Managing Editor of the Federal Government's daily English language newspaper, Emirates News, from 1985-1999, and as Adviser, Media, Environment and Heritage for the Ministry of Information and Culture from 1999-2004.
Actively engaged in studying aspects of the UAE's cultural heritage and environment, he was also Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey, established by Sheikh Zayed, from 1992-2006 and Project Director of the Sir Bani Yas pre-Islamic Christian Monastery excavations undertaken for the Tourist Development and Investment Company, TDIC, on the instructions of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, from 2009-2012. He has also worked as a consultant for the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, (now the Department of Culture and Tourism), the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, the Department of The President's Affairs, Abu Dhabi's Urban Planning Council and for other organisations.
Author and editor of over ten books dealing with the archaeology, environment and natural history of the UAE and of five histories of the UAE's major oil companies, he is a past recipient of the Sheikh Mubarak bin Mohammed Annual Award for Natural History, the country's premier environmental award, and has been a Committee Member for over 30 years of the Emirates Natural History Group, of which he is a past Chairman.
His latest book, ‘The Emirates – Our History’, jointly written with Professor Peter Magee and Mohammed Al Mubarak, Chairman of Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, was announced in April 2019. It is to be introduced into the Abu Dhabi school curriculum from September 2019, on the instructions of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
A founder member, honorary member and former Committee Member of the British Business Group - Abu Dhabi, Peter was presented with the Silver Seal of the Bailiwick of Jersey (British Channel Islands) by the Government of Jersey in November 2012, for his contribution to the development of relations between Jersey and the UAE. He has been Adviser – United Arab Emirates for the Government of Jersey since 2013.
He is also a regular columnist for the UAE daily newspaper, The National.
