Emirates ID to replace UAE residency visa in passports

Next week, from 11th April 2022, UAE residence visa stickers will no longer be stamped in residents’ passports. Instead, an individual’s residency or citizen status will be contained on their Emirates ID card.
For those expat residents already living and working in Abu Dhabi and Dubai,a with existing visas in their passports, there is no need to take any action. The next time the visa is renewed, the information will be updated onto their new Emirates ID card.
All UAE residents and citizens are required to have an Emirates ID card. It is used for proof of identity, accessing online government services and smart gates at airports.
Increasingly government departments and private organizations are connecting to the infrastructure of the Emirates ID card to be able to securely identify individuals and to offer more services online, including biometric identification and digital signatures. This not only improves their own processes and enables them to provide better services to their customers, but it also reduces the risk of fraud for the card holder.
The second generation of Emirates ID cards were launched last year with advanced characteristics and enhanced protection of non-visable data. The Emirates ID card is intended to be a single, trusted, source of an individual’s data providing a higher level of security and reduced risk of fraud.
