Born in London, UK, Peter Hellyer first came to the United Arab Emirates in 1975 to make documentary films of the foreign state visits of the country's founding President, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He was granted UAE citizenship by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in late 2010 in recognition of his services to the state. In March 2014, he was awarded the Abu Dhabi Medal by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi for his services to knowledge and conservation of the Emirate's history & heritage.
